Steelers vs. Jets – Week 7, 2024

I noticed the Steelers are doing a bit more this game of downblocking…thank goodness. Crazy it took this long when we saw the same progression last year. Tried zone blocking, didn’t really work that well and now we’re doing this and lo and behold it’s looking so much better (and against a really talented Jets front)

I feel like some of the 2nd year players didn’t take the step forward I’d like to see them. I’m talking (obviously) Broderick Jones, but Benton in the run game is about the exact same as he was last year, with fewer splash plays outside of the knockdowns.
-I’d like to see the Steelers draft or acquire a nose next year to play Benton more in a 3 tech cause he is a little undersized for the nose. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still good, but I’d love to see him get more one on ones.

The other 2nd year guy that hasn’t taken the step forward is JPJ, although I think that’s more due to the scheme changing. They don’t run him in press man as much and it disappoints me. I’d love to just have him pressed up every down no matter the coverage, make it hard for the QB to read what he’s going to do since he can do it all from press alignment with his length.
-He has gotten much better against the run though

Two 2nd year guys def took step forwards though. Darnell Washington is looking real nice at TE (not perfect, but I like him) and obviously we all know Nick Herbig and what he’s done by now. Hope he heals up soon.

Steelers got worked all game by shallow checkdowns and screens. Which is concerning since Baltimore is so good at that, plus it’s like the easiest thing in the world for the offense to do. Open field tackling was a major issue
-I will say the refs didn’t seem to care about block in the back calls (remember, if either hand is on the back it’s a block in the back) so that didn’t help the tackling.

I still don’t know why this staff isn’t doing more to help TJ. They need to have a designated hitter, someone to go out and chip the chip man back. Make em think twice before teeing off on TJ. Use a man to take out a man, that’s great math.

I see the refs just don’t care about early get offs by the tackles anymore.

Hopefully the Steelers realize soon that when teams aren’t chipping TJ it’s 90% chance it’s a short pass concept or screen.

Talk about 2nd year bumps. I hope Peyton Wilson works on his ability to take on o-linemen this offseason.
-but man does he have great sideline to sideline speed. Can be REALLY special. (as long as he doesn’t learn coverage from Patrick Queen, that guy is a traffic cone out there not looking for work

I think Arthur Smith had his best game of the season. Is that due to Russell making changes at the line, the updated run game or Arthur just getting better with his personnel? Whatever it is, shout out to him
-I really liked all the rub routes to get separation on the man coverage the Jets were playing

Talking about man coverage, my new line of jockstraps have come in. So buy them at your local shopko.

But talking about man coverage last night it was interesting to see the Steelers switched to more man press later when Donte Jackson came out the game with an injury and Pierre filled in. I wonder why that is, is it due to the steelers staff thinking it’d be better for the gameplan? Is it due to them not trusting Donte in press since he’s better in off man coverage? Because JPJ looked remarkable in press late, but it saddens me to take your best corner and put him in a worse role because the other starter can’t play it.
-I just don’t understand why they can’t call split coverages more to take advantage of the talents they have.

Beanie Bishop…We’ve been frustrated with you for a while. Great to see Tomlin’s patience pay off. Amazing game with the pics and the other plays.

Talk about Tomlin’s decisions…Russell Wilson seems to have turned a lot of fans opinion around.

About Russell…I thought he played really well once he settled in. How often in this blog have we begged them to just throw the ball deep to Pickens. So far he’s been the most effective at it. Both the placement and the game script of play action it’s been great. Although some of the placement was a bit behind Pickens so it ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. (more of moonballs)

Steelers vs. Raiders – Week 6, 2024

Patrick Queen had his best week as a Steeler.

Offensive line held up pretty decent in pass blocking (outside of when Broderick Jones is just completely missing blocking assignments.)

After watching the all-22, I’m excited to see what Wilson can do. I’ll leave it at that.

Najee had a good game, holes opened up a little better and he fought hard

I like more of Arthur Smiths playcalls this game. The execution on some of it by the players needs to be much better though. So is that a coaching issue or talent?

The Steelers are dealing with the chips on TJ by dropping him in coverage a bit more. That’s not a bad solution. I’d like to see more aggression and blitz the chip to take advantage of the double team.
-like why don’t they just have a guy inside or outside TJ run and hit that player as he’s setting up to chip TJ? Easily takes a receiving threat out of the play. And on defense you take one for ones.
-like oh you’re gonna chip our guy? We hit you back

They have JPJ playing in a system where his talents aren’t maxed. I need to see him press man more. Or try the press 3 like Seattle use to. He seems perfect for that system.
-I know they play off because that’s what Donte is better at but can you just press JPJ every play? Whether it’s 3 or man it’ll be harder for the QB to tell.

They are playing a lot of soft cover 3 these last few weeks. I don’t love it.

I love watching Cam Heyward. He is MAULING.

The Steelers are going very slow with Roman Wilson, which makes sense. Tomlin did the same last year with guys like Benton. But the separation needs to get better out of the WRs.

Steelers vs. Colts – Week 4, 2024

Joey Porter Jr.’s worst game of his professional career? It wasn’t BAD BAD, but he got beat a couple times and should have had a few INTs.

Steelers’ defense got torn up first few drives, soft zone got beat up and they didn’t really adjust well after their strategy to deal with Richardson, have his inaccuracy short and medium bail you out got put on it’s head when Flacco came in.

I did think the Colts matched up well with the Steelers, having one of the best o-lines in the league to help neutralize the Steelers biggest strength (and obviously having Highsmith out hurts the defense a ton)

Colts had a great game plan to take advantage of the Steelers linebackers. Just from watching the game on television we saw them get beat up.

It was a true Fields made bad plays, but he also made good ones.

HOW MANY WEEKS IN A ROW ARE WE GOING TO SAY, ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS CLEAN UP THE SLOPPY PLAY?

Too many missed assignments, bad communication and more

I’m interested to dive back into the film again because their run game looks a lot like it did early in the year with Canada, heavy sets, zone runs that get easily stuffed because we can see them coming. I can’t wait until Arthur Smith discovers what the Steelers staff did later last year, maybe we should mix it up, call more gap/power stuff and not be so easy to stack the box against.
-watching this all 22 film has me angry with how awful the Steelers are with this play calling

EVERY TIME YOU BRING MORE PEOPLE CLOSE TO THE OFFENSIVE LINE, THE DEFENSE BRINGS THE SAME NUMBERS. YOU AREN’T MAKING IT EASIER TO RUN, IT’S ACTUALLY HARDER.

Patrick Queen…oof. I’m not sure he’s going to be on the team this time next year if he keeps up this play. Really bad against the run 🙁
-he just can’t get off blocks, why isn’t he using his athleticism to shoot past the linemen? He clearly can’t take them on head on but he just kinda sits there when they’re on him and waits for the linemen to meet him then he just dances with them sadie hawkins style
-would rather have Elandon Roberts out there every down

The first drive, they just got dominated up front, Colts o-line really did a nice job

The offensive line is bad at picking up blitzes and stunts. They’re young but let’s hope coaching catches on soon with this (we had the same problems last year)

I like Mason McCormack. I’d keep him at left guard, move Seumalo back to right since Daniels is out for the year and probably gone as a free agent and Seumalo spent his time in Philly as a right guard.

Steelers need to figure out a way to save TJ Watt from these chips. I suggest overload blitzes, or just some sort of nickel blitz so that way if the chip hits TJ, the guy has a free rush at the QB

Steelers don’t disguise their defenses enough. It’s too obvious when they’re in press man vs. zone, etc.

I don’t know why Pickens isn’t the first read 50% of the time. It feels like Fields is focused elsewhere too often when Pickens is almost always open

I said this a couple weeks back but it’s showing on film again. Muth cannot separate in man coverage. The way he runs feels like he’s going 80% out there

It almost feels like Najee isn’t patient enough for this zone scheme. Like he’s the guy in Madden that’s always holding right trigger and running into the back of his o-line. Need a little bit more Le’Veon Bell in his game. We saw what someone with good vision did when Patterson came in for those rushes before he got hurt

…I just watched the Steelers send a backer from TJs side and he got in untouched…Flacco got the ball out quick (for no gain) but I want to see more of this. Free rushers are free money!

The next play TJ flipped sides and they sent an overload blitz from there with Herbig dropping out as the left edge (TJ’s normal side) The play ended up being an explosive one sadly but I like the mix up
-you can def tell TJ doesn’t feel comfortable on the right side
–I really think they should work on attacking the double on TJ, take notes from the old LB coach of the Steelers now coaching in Minnesota

Leal played…okayish, not really. He needs to learn pass rush moves if they’re going to play him on the edge. He just runs into the tackle, he should be trying to run over the tackle if wants to use power moves like that
-the more I watch the less I like

Have I not talked enough about DeShon Elliott? Dude’s been an absolute stud pickup. Nice work Omar.

Najee being a vet but not knowing to go out of bounds in a running clock situation is embarrassing.
-no game situational intelligence along with his inability to effectively run in a zone based system…I feel like the Steelers made the right decision this offseason.

I do feel like Arthur Smith’s long distance pass calls are pretty bad. The standard play is “just go to the sticks and stop.” Can this guy watch some other team’s calls in this situation. Streak, post, dig. Or streak, corner, flat. PUT SOME DUDES IN CONFLICT in this situation.

Final thoughts, brutal mistakes, bad run game, iffy pass concepts. Same thing, different week on offense even though Fields really showed out at times, which is super encouraging. Defense def suffered from no Highsmith and the Colts taking advantage of quick strikes, exposing the Steelers linebackers was just good strategy.

Steelers vs. Broncos – Week 2, 2024

Thoughts – defense good, offense rough. Why does Joey Porter Jr. keep wearing his yellow gloves? He always gets penalties with them cursed jersey grabbers

One encouraging sign from the offense is that it looked good at times but a lot of those times were brought back on penalty. That won’t always be the case.

One discouraging sign for the defense, you won’t always face a quarterback that’s inaccurate under pressure. If you want to win in the playoffs, these open WRs will be hit by Stroud/Mahomes and you need to play a little better to make it work.

Why is Arthur bringing back the 3rd down Canada special of just running stop routes? It’s super predictable and as we see easily defendable. Look at the better playcallers, they all have route concepts that put defenders into conflict.
-now I’m not saying all stops is bad, I’ve just seen it too often in that situation where it becomes predictable and the Steelers don’t have separators other than Pickens to make it truly work.
-also with a QB that can move and likes to scramble, having your players all stop momentum on critical downs really reduces the power level of your QB since the WRs can’t be as effective with no momentum to get open
-if next game Arthur doesn’t run some stop and go’s on 3rd and long I know he’s washed

I am concerned with Donte Jackson, not just due to injury but because he seems to get beat deep. Feels like he’s a top athlete that doesn’t stay disciplined in coverage. He’s going to pay for it one day. The pass rush won’t always be able to bail him out. Some team will see it on tape and take a designed shot over his head.

Spencer Anderson isn’t great. And he’s one of the reasons why the run game isn’t as effective as it could be…but then I just watched a run go right behind him and he drove his guy back like 4 yards.
-I think Mr. Anderson is a little inconsistent but not at all unusable
-I’ve mentioned a lot of power runs vs. zone runs but I will say that Spencer Anderson’s strength doesn’t seem to be pulling and hitting hard. I feel like he doesn’t have that mean streak you want in an o-lineman, he doesn’t seem to have the downblock mentality.

I haven’t see much out of Connor Heyward this year, feels like he got a lot of his role eaten by Pruitt since Arthur seems to really like him.

I just watched Justin Fields watching a 6 man double mug look with a 5 wide set and he didn’t even care to motion in a blocker. Has he ever played Madden or know anything about numbers?
-he actually ended up escaping the pocket and picking up a good gain because he’s a great athlete
-He also makes reads like a bad madden player, if there’s a blitz, he’s throwing to the sideline as the hot read instead of the middle from where the blitz came from (with some exception)
-Also, stop being an idiot and throwing downfield sideline shots to anyone but Pickens

But I’m concerned that Fields has no ability to change blocking/anything at the line and it’s going to be a MAJOR issue against good teams with quality d-coordinators
-this is me doubting Fields is smart enough to do it. PROVE ME WRONG YOU FUCKING COWARD.
(I just watched Fields shout something at the line of scrimmage and it looks like they switched from a pass to the kill play, a run)

The more I watch of Friermuth the more I have no idea why they paid him. Is TE play that bad in the league?
-bad blocker, can’t separate. Hope he can find a role like Witten could getting open against zone. But so few passes have been schemed up for him over the middle.
-AND he doesn’t show effort in the scramble drills from what I’ve seen so far

Dear Arthur, please more inside zone split if you’re going to be running a lot of zone
-split has a blocker coming back to block the backside pursuit, unutilized a lot by the Rams a few years ago, provides a nice cutback lane for the RB (but the Rams have moved more to a power scheme recently)

I actually don’t hate Scotty Miller, I see him go HARD AF on his wind sprints (distraction routes)

Whats interesting is that the Steelers are playing a lot of zone of defense. I wonder if they thought running that against a rookie QB was the best path forward. Make it more confusing for him making reads vs. a man to man style defense.
-because there are players open against the zone, but Bo Nix is having trouble finding them. (it’s much easier to find them when you can pause and rewind than in the 1.85 seconds he has)

Just when I was getting worried about BENTON and not seeing him much this game (after I thought he had a down game last week) he immediately pops like a weasel and forces a super quick throw on 3rd down where it’s inaccurate and Denver has to punt.

And hold up…Dan Moore…is he finally a good tackle? I don’t know how to feel. It might be clicking. We’ll see if the Steelers can now afford to pay him going forward. Do all the dev work together and lose the stud. feelsbadman.
-wait, he kinda sucks
-I think this means he’s league average. I don’t know how to feel.

Arthur Smiths got all these funky routes for Pickens stretching the defense deep. It’s not that hard, have him on the outside, send him on a streak, get 40 yard gain.
-(although I’m saying that half in cheek, they do need to move him around)

Broderick Jones…he had the worst day anyone at his position could have. Go in, draw 3 penalties in a short period and be pulled for the rest. And he looked bad during a lot of the rest of it. But sometimes you can see he’s got that mean streak and athleticism to be a good tackle in the league. For example, he had a play at 10:09 of the 2nd quarter where he collapse the DT then moved to the 2nd level and made a bone rattler on the 2nd level defender. Cleared the way for a 15 yard gain by Najee.

2nd and long after Broderick’s first holding, what does Arthur Smith call, all stops. Fields is able to scramble out and make a crazy good dot to Pickens who once again got the best of Surtian. But Jones gets another holding, this time a little more justified than the first but still a little iffy. Regardless, let’s talk about how stops is not great when it’s used so much.
-stops is not great when it’s used so much. There, we talked.

Next play is 2nd and longer and they go with all 5 yard outs with a RB checkdown. I don’t love it but I guess Arthur is playing for the punt at this point. And a called pass no matter how safe and short gets people less angry than a “give up” run even though they’re both practically the same.

2nd half you see more blitzes, and that what it looks like Fields is struggling with. He locks on to targets a little too much instead of reading the defense and knowing where players are going and deciding on where to throw based on that movement

You don’t need me to tell you but George Pickens doing what he did to Pat Surtain this week was very impressive. Back to back difference making against two of the best CBs in the NFL. Just wild work from him.

It was interesting hearing from Tomlin that their gameplan was to stop the run first and foremost and make the rookie make plays. The Steelers were in 3 interior linemen and the two edges much more often than against Atlanta, where they were more in a nickel set with 2 interiors, 2 edges. So we saw TJ/Highsmith drop a bit more in Denver.
-and Bo did miss quite a few throws, so it worked out pretty well

Minkah is back playing deep safety and it’s everything I ever wanted.

Pruitt, the new “blocking” TE ain’t great in space at all. Both blocking and receiving. Sadly we only have one Darnell Washington 😦

Bengals vs. Steelers – Week 12, 2023

First week with the bad man gone – a weight has been lifted off the city

I thought they’d do a jet sweep first play for the meme’s but it was beautiful to see the long play down the middle to the TE. Was like one of those Mr Beast video’s where people can see for the first time

Diontae came back from his injury, played a good game but since then has been trying his best to become the bad man on the team. Veteran move taking the pressure off Pickens
-I still hate it

Tomlin is a coward with punts. What a cringe coach.
-4th and two from the Bengals 44, punts. Ball gets a touchback. Dude gained 24 yards of possession when there was like a 60% chance or more of converting.

I feel like since JPJ hasn’t gotten picks in the last few weeks we aren’t talking about him as much but his presence isn’t just turnovers. For example, the first Bengals offensive play: it was a play action and the Steelers went pressure. Bengals did a decent job of giving time but Chase was driving into JPJ’s chest on the press and didn’t look around soon enough for the pressure to finally cause the pass to be thrown away.
-the play was 100% a win due to JPJ but it won’t show as a knock down or a pass defense in the box score

Dear Steelers, when you are showing pressure with the double mug look, don’t have your LBs a yard off the ball. It’s obvious you’re not coming, defeating the mug concept. That’s like robbing a bank with a bomb on your chest but everyone can see it’s just road flares.

Calvin Austin is not as good of a returner as I was hoping he’d be. To be fair there isn’t much there for him but I feel like he should be more explosive looking
-Our entire special teams kinda sucks right now. Ever since the ST Coach got destroyed at the end of the packers game

Kenny still shows issues with route anticipation. He had a corner open to Diontae but he didn’t pull the trigger because Diontae wasn’t looking at him. But if he was confident he’d let it rip and Diontae would have gotten his head around in time.

I just want to say it’s interesting that people are back on the Najee train. Almost like we told ya’ll a few weeks ago that he wasn’t the issue even when every filthy casual said he was. (production vs draft position is a solid argument though, I think everyone would prefer Creed Humphrey right now)

I’m still seeing Pickens one on one and Kenny is not taking it. I HATE EVERYTHING. JUST THROW IT YOU BUM.

Najee’s Angry Run where he emerged from the pile was basically all the result of Broderick Jones our stud rookie’s continued effort on the play. His lead block and drive resulted in Najee still staying upright and gaining all those extra yards. Really good effort, love to see it. Thick. Solid. Tight.

Kenny had 4 verts against cover 2 and looked to Muth down the left sideline instead of Pickens down the right. I feel like ANY TIME YOU GOT PICKENS TAKE IT. HE IS A LITERAL GLITCH.

Even though Kenny looked better, there is still a ton of meat left on these bones. Unlearning the Canada will take time. Does anyone know a good cult deprogrammer?

Mycal Walker – nice play on the tip passed (that Chase caught off the tip) but then really bad play not taking a shot near the end zone on the guy that was scampering in. Need to try to lay him out there to prevent the points. Overall okay game, can’t expect too much for a recent signing.

Darnell Washington got a catch on a regular route! Work them big dudes in. More vertical high points please! Madden taught me they’re the glitch

I need more playing time for Nick Herbig like everyone needs more money. It’s just a fact of life. I truly want to see him get 20 snaps a game instead of 5.

Kenny needs to learn to chill in clean pockets just a little bit more. I don’t fault him for his skittishness because of how bad pass pro has been but basically any 20+ yard concept that’s not a straight streak or post can be thrown out the playbook because he gets the ball out before they develop. And not just due to the breakdown of protection, just his internal clock.

Steelers still ain’t great at blitz pickup (and Kenny looks bad under the pressure of the blitz)
-I blame all of Kenny, Mason Cole and the coaches

Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like the Steelers secondary has caught on to the fact that when teams don’t line someone up on TJ to chip, the pass is going to be out in 2 seconds. Seeing some nice route jumps when the Bengals showed their hand this way.

I like how whenever the Steelers move TJ Watt inside to rush the center it’s been a run play lol

Holy crap, the Steelers ran the play I’ve been trying to get them to run this whole season (almost)
Basically when you see extra protection to TJ’s side, this time both a TE and RB, have TJ lock onto the TE and cover him (exactly what happened)
-the benefit here is that TJ essentially takes out 2 offensive players, the tackle and the TE, allowing you to overload the weak.
-The only issue with the Steelers call this time is that they only sent 4 which allowed the RB to slide and pick up. I say send 5. If they would have listened to me it’s an EZ sack.
-It was almost perfect, just didn’t commit enough.

The one free release TJ sack came from a nickel blitz to his side that confused the protection. ALMOST LIKE THIS BLOG WANTED. LOVE IT.

Crazy how good Trenton Thompson has been for us. Got a nice pick this week, similar play to the one he dropped last week. Overall been really solid on film other than the splash play.

One note: new offensive coordinator(s), and now Miles Boykin isn’t a run tell! He was out for 8 plays this week, 4 run, 4 pass. Yay!

It seemed like the Bengals were really ready for Jaylen Warren and the outside run game this week. These under center heavy sets with him in them might be a little too much of a giveaway.
-You all know my disdain for their love of this set. I will say they’ve been better out of it these last few weeks since they’ve started using a bit more play action.
-but overall they don’t do enough out of it to make defenses respect the pass

Overall solid game, 400 yards offensively for the first time since Canada took over and now that he’s gone that curse has been lifted. Defense was truly the game winner. Our pass rush was back doing it’s dirty thing with pressure’s and sacks. That’s even with the Bengals getting the ball out quick. (which is really the gameplay to beat this team.)

The most pleasant surprise this year has been Keeanu Benton. His ability to play nose with Heyward and the other interior d-lineman has turned us into a good run defense. In previous years that was a HUGE issue. Elandon Roberts being a good run stuffer has really helped too, dudes out here straight stuffing o-linemen on pulls and it’s a sight to see.

So good run d, great pass rush. Just need to get Minkah back and the new guys more on the same page (saw JPJ blow another coverage but Highsmith was at the QB in 2 seconds so the ball was thrown away) and the team will be really cooking.

But overall still can’t shake the feeling that this offensive performance happened against a lessor team and the true test is yet to come.

Steelers vs. Browns – Week 11, 2023

The Steelers are who we thought they were. Good defense, bad offense with the problems at OC, QB, LT and C. (although our entire o-line struggled with pass blocking at times)

Even though the defense let up only 13 points let’s not let them off the hook for folding. I feel like it’s gotten kinda bland schematically. It’s the plain yogurt of defenses, sure it works but I feel like cutting some strawberries in there would help.

I actually don’t blame the DC as much for this since we have a practice squad secondary and LB core right now. Tough to teach complexity to freshmen. Got to start with 101.
-But I will say seeing the Browns and the different looks thrown against our offense vs. the looks we gave them was kinda night and day
-The 2nd half was generally really good outside of the fold at the end (the offense should have been on the field doing Pickler things anyways)

Let’s give credit to the Browns who did a good job of checking down across the field to limit the damage the QB can do to the O.

Surprised the Steelers didn’t switch to a more aggressive cover 2 to clamp those under routes because DTR showed a lot of inaccuracies even on short throws.

And DTR’s inaccuracies is why we shouldn’t let the Steelers defense off the hook, there were a lot of opportunities that the steelers got lucky on by the ball being off target to WRs or them dropping it.

But that’s enough negativity about the defense, the offense justifiably should get almost all of the blame for the loss.

Just so many questions that I’m not sure anyone has answers for.

Cleveland stacked the box against our heavy sets…why didn’t we just throw jump balls to Pickens?

Warren looked incredible…why did he only get 9 carries?

Do the Steelers not know their own personnel?

How do we know stars are big balls of gas and not just holes in the universe?

Kenny coming out and saying they didn’t expect (and therefore didn’t prep as much presumably) for zone was embarrassing as an excuse. Like what a simple adjustment if you are a professional. There were plenty of guys open in these zones, he just didn’t pull the trigger.
-you know I just thought of something. Do you think Kenny doesn’t know you can throw streaks against zone coverage?

Najee coming out and saying that it felt like the Browns knew some of the plays that were coming was just another notch in the belt of embarrassing Canada anecdotes. We’ve heard that like a dozen times over the last two years from opponents and Steelers alike now.

Steelers threw a lot of screens in the game…I like the screen game, they barely used it earlier in the year and now it feels like it’s a huge staple of the offense. I feel like there should be a happy medium but against a blitz happy Browns it was probably a fine week to make it a staple.

Please utilize more play action Matt Canada.

BTW Trubo being the backup quarterback might be the worst decision I’ve ever seen. He is probably the worst QB I’ve ever seen take up the pigskin for the black and gold.,

I STILL DON’T KNOW WHY WE AREN’T ROTATING TJ WATT MORE
-He was on the field for 73 of 75 snaps
-for comparison Garrett was on for 49 of 58 reps
-TJ has complained about being gassed at the end of games and they still don’t rotate even thought they have very solid edge depth.
–replace both coordinators

This is still a Keeanu Benton simp blog. (just saw him swim move the center and then knock Bitonio (the left guard) on his butt on a run play.)

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Cam Heyward still got that dawg in him

I AM CRYING AT MY SCREEN WATCHING ONE ON ONE DEEP WITH PICKENS AVAILABLE
-this happened multiple times and it made me sad seeing it every time
-they even had it on 3rd and long and didn’t take it

I just watched an under center play action (great!) but Kenny did a boot out (okay, moving pocket is good) and then there were no routes on the side of the field that Kenny had to throw the ball to except one 20 yards+ downfield that was covered by 4 dudes
-what is this play design Canada, give some options to the guy
–maybe someone was supposed to release to the flat that forgot to? Guys not knowing the assignment is also the o coordinators fault

I know it’s been meme’d on a lot but Kenny’s back and to the left spin is starting to get hilarious, just like the JFK assassination
-but seriously dude is killing us, such a bad move

Yo I just figured it out, you know how lefties in Madden have a weird hitch when trying to escape the pocket right? What if Kenny is a secret Madden lefty but right handed and him trying to escape left is his glitch?
-Like some sort of Zoolander situation?

DeMarvin Leal is losing snaps…for good reason. He looks like shit.
On that note, when did Loudermilk get decent? He no longer is embarrassing himself out here and is making some splashes against the run.

I actually like the depth on this d-line, from Heyward to Larry O, Benton, Loudermilk, A. Watts and even with Adams when he comes back. There’s some real solid interior dudes here. A good group they’ve assembled that held up real nice against one of the best interior o-lines in the NFL. Although maybe Bitonio might not be amazing anymore idk but he has been a stud for like a decade.

Add Elandon Roberts on top of that and the run defense looks a lot better than it has in some time.

Even though once again every time Miles Boykin is on the field we run the ball (6 for 6 this week!) he had some nice blocks on Warren’s long TD run that finished it off. Screw it, show all the tells!

Also, I got to give credit where credit is due. Mason Cole. If it weren’t for your lead blocks on that run it wouldn’t have happened, nice work dude.

This tape is so funny Kenny gets rid of the ball quick when he has time but holds onto it against the blitz. Either playcalls are unlucky or something else is happening…

There are far too many deep concepts in Canada’s playbook…which is fine but when you’re getting screamed at with a blitz you got to stop with these and start running more drag routes.

How often has this blog called for more mesh concepts? It’s been so frequent I get a meal free next time I mention it.

I don’t know why but it seems Kenny doesn’t vibe with the stop routes in the middle of the field, so just stop calling them Canada, even though they’re normally fine, it’s too much and it’s not working

I feel like I don’t talk about Warren enough in the blog…is that cause we all just know he’s really good? Like we can just see his magic on our television on Sunday, it’s very evident seeing him spin gold from these tattered strings of offense given to him.

So…Kenny kept throwing it to Diontae for some reason. It kinda pissed me off seeing him keep targeting him when the superior WR was available to throw to, and it didn’t seem like he had communication issues with Pickens like he did with Diontae.
-Diontae is not an outside WR in the same caliber of Pickens. The only rational I can see is that Kenny wanted to get him some confidence…or maybe feed the squeaky wheel? But yeah that last drive was REALLY bad.

Ranking Steelers based on how they’ve played through 5 weeks

A silly exercise to compare dudes across different positions. But this is basically how much I’ve enjoyed watching each of these guys play each week. Basically “how good are they doing what they do”

I’m not going to rank guys who haven’t played much O or D reps or guys who got injured early like Diontae Johnson and Cam Heyward

1TJ WattWatt else can be said about the best defender in the NFL?
2Alex HighsmithHe eats so good
3George PickensAbsurdly talented, horribly used
4Keeanu BentonYoung rook has looked waaay better than I thought, need more PT
5Joey Porter Jr.ditto from above
6Minkah FitzpatrickHasn’t made the splash plays that we’re accustomed to seeing
7Larry OgunjobiHolding down the d-line admirably in Cam’s absence
8Elandon RobertsInsane run defender, love watching him explode into the hole and make tackles
9Broderick JonesOnly been 2 games but his last vs. Balt was AWESOME
10Jaylen WarrenLegit explosive af and used on better playcalls than Najee
11Cole HolcombBest LB we’ve had since Shaz (that isn’t saying much lol)
12Najee HarrisSuffers from most his runs being telegraphed to the defense, almost no holes
13Montravius AdamsUsed as a nose but he’s not thicc enough for doubles IMO. But my god does he HUSTLE, got that DAWG
14Kwon AlexanderA little better in coverage than the other two, had some decent plays but overall average
15Calvin AustinExplosive speed, rest of game is lacking
16Markus GoldenGreat rotational pass rush piece, sadly not incredible against the run
17Pat FreiermuthWasn’t utilized enough when healthy, hope that changes when he gets back
18Connor HeywardNot a great blocker, but seems to get the job of getting open in space down
19Isaac SeumaloStruggled HEAVY against SF but since then has been real solid, makes a bit of sense since he was mostly a RG in Phi but LG with us
20Nick HerbigNeeds many more reps, give TJ/Highsmith more breaks and let the young kid get his feet wetter
21Patrick PetersonLet up some big plays but sadly is our best CB besides JPJ
22Kenny PickettHard to separate his issues from Canada’s, def left some plays on the board
23Armon WattsNothing special, doesn’t have a ton of reps
24Damontae KazeeThis is about the meh line for me, everyone below this needs major improvement. Kazee has been very meh, not a good tackler, not crazy valuable in coverage either
25James DanielsRegressed from last year and now injured
26Allen RobinsonHas some nice hands but lacks explosiveness and some lazy routes it seems
27Chukwuma OkoraforBrutal work at RT, def look to upgrade this position. I can’t believe he makes 8 figures a year
28Darnell WashingtonHe was supposed to be a better blocker than this. Coach also doesn’t utilize his strengths well
29Nate HerbigAbout as good as Daniels (not great) but has played less
30DeMarvin LealDisappointing, so streaky, he’ll have a great play then be replacement level on others
31Isaiahh LoudermilkJust is not stout enough
32Levi WallaceBurnt toast, not great against the run, slow
33Mason ColeThis guy is getting shoved in lockers
34Chandon SullivanDon’t hear his name much but take it from me looks way more cooked than Wallace, which is tough to do
35Dan Moore Jr.The best thing that’s happened to Pitt’s offenses is his injury
